Angel Di Maria will pay a fine of £1.76 million to avoid spending time in prison after admitting to tax fraud.
The Argentine winger defrauded the Spanish government of £1.14m during his time at Real Madrid and will subsequently pay a 60 per cent fine on top of what is already owed. Di Maria admitted to two counts of fraud, which hold six-month sentences each, but will not face any jail time.
A number of elite players have been accused of fraud in recent months, including Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest player to find himself embroiled in such a controversy – he is alleged to have failed to pay €14.7m in image rights – leading to a saga over his future at Real Madrid.
