The World Cup winning left-back wanted to pay the support in installments but has not been allowed.
World Cup winning defender Roberto Carlos has been sentenced to three months in prison in his native Brazil after failing to pay more than £15,000 in child support.
The former Real Madrid left-back owes 61,000 Real (£15,148) to former partner Barbara Thurler, who is the mother of two of his children.
The 44-year-old claims he is in financial difficulty and offered to pay the sum in installments, an offer which was rejected by the judge.
Carlos was subsequently handed the prison sentence, though his lawyer claims the matter will be settled without him having to spend time behind bars.
Carlos, who won the Champions League three times during an illustrious career, is currently expecting his ninth child with current wife Mariana Lucon.
After retiring from playing in 2012, Carlos has enjoyed coaching and managerial spells at four clubs including Anzhi Makhachkala, Sivasspor, Akhisar Belediyespor and, most recently, Delhi Dynamos.
Carlos played 125 times for Brazil between 1992 and 2006, scoring 11 goals.
